How Parents Can Protect Their Children From Too Much Sun

The sun is something that all human beings have grown to depend on. The sun provides daily light for the world and it helps to wake us up in the morning. The sun that provides the heat that we all love during the summertime is just as dangerous as it is helpful. Within a matter of minutes skin can become damaged by the sun. The individuals at the most risk for sun damage are children because they tend to be outside more often than any other age group.

It is known that the sun’s ultraviolet rays are the strongest between ten in the morning and three in the afternoon. Parents are encouraged to keep their children out of the direct sunlight during this time. Children do not have to stay inside; however, they should be wearing sun screen, protective clothing, or they could play in an area shaded.

The protective clothing mentioned above should include a hat. Baseball hats are common hats worn by many children and teenagers; however, they do not offer full protect. Brimmed hats that are wide offer a large amount of protection to the back of the neck, ears, eyes, and the nose.

Whenever children will be outside for a short or long period of time their parents are encouraged to make sure that their children are wearing sunglasses. When first purchasing sunglasses it is important to go for protection versus the ones that the kids like the most. The majority of sunglasses will display the amount of ultraviolet protection they offer directly on the price tag.

Children aged two and up are encouraged to wear traditional sunscreen that is offers at least an SPF of fifteen. Parents of children who are under the age of two are urged to keep their children directly out of the sunlight or apply baby sunscreen to their children. Baby sunscreen offers infants and toddlers the same amount of protection; however, the formula is typically easier on their skin.

When sunscreen is being used it is important that parents follow the directions. Some sunscreens are waterproof while others are not. Parents with sunscreen that is not waterproof are encouraged to reapply the sunscreen to their children whenever they surface from the water. Although some sunscreens may be labeled as waterproof it is still a good idea to reapply the sunscreen every couple of hours.

The above mentioned tips are easy and inexpensive ways that parents can prevent their children from developing major skin problems associated with too much sun. It is important to remember that sunscreen is not only needed at the beach, but for everyday activities.
